Sedona Family Photographer
Even though I live almost three hours away, Sedona, Arizona, remains one of my absolute favorite places to capture family moments. With its breathtaking landscapes and unique red rock formations, Sedona is more than just a beautiful backdrop—it’s a place where families can create unforgettable memories. For many of my clients visiting from out of town, a family photography session becomes the ultimate souvenir from their trip.
Location: Cathedral Rock
When you think of Sedona, chances are Cathedral Rock comes to mind. This iconic red rock formation is one of Sedona’s most photographed landmarks for a reason.
Cathedral Rock is stunning at both sunrise and sunset, offering golden light that perfectly complements the vivid reds of the rocks. The location features a wide-open rock plateau with crevices that sometimes hold pools of water, adding a unique and playful touch to your photos. Best of all, it’s a versatile spot that works well for both small and large groups—just as long as everyone can handle a short, 15-minute hike.
Sunrise vs. Sunset: Which is Better for Your Sedona Family Photos?
Ah, the golden question: What time of day is best for family pictures? I get this question all the time, especially from clients visiting Sedona for the first time.
And my answer? It depends! 😊
There are two main factors to consider:
- Your Vacation Plans – This is the big one! How you plan to spend your day can make a big difference when choosing between sunrise or sunset sessions.
- Your Location Choice – Certain spots in Sedona shine brighter (literally) at specific times of day. Some are best at sunrise for soft, glowing light, while others are ideal at sunset for rich, warm tones.
The Case for Sunrise Sessions
Sunrise sessions come with early meeting times—sometimes as early as 5:15 AM in the summer (though winter lets you sleep in until about 7:30 AM 😉). That said, there are some BIG perks:
- Perfect for Early Risers: If you’re traveling from a different time zone, you may already be waking up early. Why not take advantage of it?
- Stress-Free Mornings: Checking photos off your list first thing lets you enjoy the rest of your day without worrying about tired kids or running late.
- Less Crowded Locations: Popular spots like Cathedral Rock are quieter at sunrise, giving us the place (almost) to ourselves.
The Case for Sunset Sessions
Sunset sessions have their own magic:
- Golden Hour Glow: Sedona’s red rocks look especially vibrant during sunset, creating dreamy and colorful photos.
- A Flexible Start to the Day: If your family plans include hiking, swimming, or other adventures, you can take your time and relax before getting ready.
- Less Rush: For families who don’t love early mornings, sunset is the perfect way to wrap up a day of fun.
The key is to plan ahead—if you’re aiming for sunset, leave enough time to get back to the hotel, shower, and arrive at the location without stress. After all, happy, relaxed kids make for the best photos!
