What is a Fresh 48? | Arizona Birth Photographer

A Fresh 48 session is a newborn session that takes place at the delivery location within the first 48 hours of baby’s life. If you like the idea of capturing the hospital experience but a full birth story seems a little too intense, a Fresh 48 is a great alternative.

Usually between one to three hours, these sessions are meant to document baby’s first moments. Between the physical and emotional exhaustion of labor and delivery there is so much you won’t remember. A Fresh 48 will help you remember the thoughts and feelings you experience and the quirky little things about your newborn that will quickly fade.

Some of my clients like to do their makeup and wear a cute nursing dress or robe for these pictures. If that sounds like way too much to take on after just giving birth, that’s okay. At their heart these are documentary sessions. They’re meant to capture life as it happens, real and raw, even if that means no makeup and a hospital gown. They’re meant to document the reality of birth and the special bonding between parents and baby.

What to expect for your Fresh 48 Session

Before and during delivery

You should choose your Fresh 48 photographer well before your due date. Notify your photographer when you’re headed to the hospital and again after baby is born. After giving you a little time for some baby cuddles your photographer will then get in touch to schedule your exact session time before you check out of the hospital.

The Fresh 48 Session

Make sure your photographer has all the information they’ll need to get to your room (ex. room number, your code, etc.). When I arrive I like to take a minute to say hi to the newest member of your family. We’ll try to schedule around it but baby’s keep their own schedule so I try my best to work around theirs. If it’s feeding time I will wait while you finish or snap some pictures if its a moment you want to preserve. Then when everyone is ready we’ll jump right in.

Like I said, these are documentary sessions so there is less posing and lots of me moving around to capture the moments as they happen. Mommy cuddles. Daddy cuddles. A family picture. Meeting siblings for the first time. Then we’ll put baby in the hospital bassinet or at the foot of the hospital bed and grab some newborn portraits.

After the Session

When we’re done I immediately download and start editing your images. My goal is to get you at least one picture so you can use it to announce your good news to the world! The rest of your images will be delivered within two to three weeks.

I recommend creating a baby album for your little one to tell the story of their birth. My little girl isn’t quite 2 and she already LOVES to look through her baby book and point to herself in the pictures. Ask me about pricing if you’d like a professionally designed and printed baby album
