Photographing Your Family

Documentary - My Philosophy & Approach

My approach to documentary photography comes from a simple realization: when you try to summarize a life in images, you don’t reach for a portrait—you reach for the moments in between. The real stuff. The candid, ordinary, unscripted pieces that actually tell you what a life felt like, not just what it looked like.

So much of this perspective came from my own life and experiences. I started noticing how often the most meaningful images weren’t the perfectly posed ones, but the fleeting, everyday moments—the chaos, the laughter, the routines, the small interactions that would otherwise go unseen. These are the images that hold truth. They carry memory, emotion, and story in a way that nothing staged ever could.

And honestly, I think many of us are tired of the “Pinterest perfect” version of family life we’re constantly shown. The curated, coordinated, picture-perfect moments are beautiful—but they don’t reflect the full, messy, meaningful reality of living. I believe there’s something far more powerful in choosing to see your real life as enough, exactly as it is.

That’s what documentary photography is to me: real life, unplugged. No directing, no performance, no pressure to be anything other than yourselves. I simply step into your world as it already is and quietly document what unfolds. The beauty of this approach is that your life doesn’t need to be styled or rearranged to be meaningful—it already is.

And over time, these images become more than photographs. They become a record of your seasons, a way to return to the rhythms of your everyday life long after they’ve changed. Because the truth is, the days are long, but the years are short—and this is about preserving what it actually felt like to live them.

“These will be shared for generations. These aren’t your standard photos… these are memories captured!”
– Nicole G.

I’m here for whatever photographic needs your family has right now. From the birth of your newest addition to any ordinary Tuesday, your reality is worthy of being documented. Fill me in, and together we’ll celebrate the big and little moments that make up this chapter.

How Much Time Do We Need to Tell Your Story?

Each session length offers a different rhythm, depth, and window into your life.

Documentary photography gets better with time. The longer we’re together, the more space we have to move past that initial “performance” phase—you know, when kids are running up saying “take a picture of this!” and everyone’s still trying to hold a smile.

But then something shifts. Energy settles, the camera fades into the background, and everyone starts to just be. That’s when the real moments—the honest, meaningful ones—begin to unfold.

The more time you give it, the more we get to live in that part.

I offer four pre-built session lengths based on how long we’ll spend together. But if your story calls for something different, I’m always happy to create a custom experience tailored to you.

3 Hrs

A three-hour session captures a meaningful slice of your family’s real, everyday life. It gives us time to settle in, move past the camera, and document genuine moments as they unfold. Together, we’ll choose a time of day that reflects what you want to remember most.

Half-Day

A half-day session is my most popular option, giving me time to truly blend into your family’s natural rhythm. We’ll typically focus on a morning into afternoon or afternoon into evening, documenting everyday routines like waking, meals, play, and bedtime. With more time together, we’re able to tell a fuller story of your life as it unfolds.

Full-Day

A full-day session is the most complete way to document your family’s everyday life. I’ll photograph from morning through evening, capturing the rhythms, routines, and in-between moments that make up your day. It’s a chance to slow down, be fully present with your kids, and let me preserve all the little moments that are so easy to miss.

Full-year

A full-year session is the most complete way to document your family’s life and how it changes over time. It includes 24 hours of coverage spread throughout the year, scheduled however you choose, capturing different seasons, milestones, and everyday rhythms. It’s a beautiful way to see not just a moment, but the story of your life as it unfolds across a full year.

“It is quite the gift to see our little lives from this perspective.” – Jacinda K.
