What's It Like?

The MEP Documentary Experience

People like to say documentary sessions are easy—that they require less planning and preparation than portraits, that all you have to do is show up.

And that’s true… but also not quite.

Have you ever collapsed onto the couch at the end of a long day and felt completely content? The kind of day where you think, “That was a really good day.”

Those days usually aren’t packed with errands or obligations. They’re full of connection, laughter, and time together—and pretty light on things like calling your insurance company or doing your taxes.

The point is: real life already holds beautiful, meaningful days. They exist.

So during our time together, we intentionally make space for more of that—and less of the things that drain you.

Because let’s be honest… you don’t need me there on tax day.

BOOK YOUR SESSION

The first step is a phone call. Documentary sessions can feel personal and even a little vulnerable, so I want you to feel completely comfortable with the person you’re inviting into your home.

We’ll talk about you—your family, what your days look like, what draws you to this kind of photography, and what parts of your story feel important to hold onto right now. We might brainstorm a little, dream a little, but mostly we’ll focus on understanding what matters most to you and choosing a date that works.

PRE-SESSION

Once you’re booked, we’ll make a plan. Not a rigid schedule, but a loose framework that helps you feel prepared and confident going in.

Different session lengths call for different approaches.

A three-hour session might sound long, but it flies by. Without a bit of intention, it’s easy to slip into “performance mode”—moving from one thing to the next, trying to keep everyone engaged. Instead, we’ll plan two or three simple activities you already love. Things like making breakfast together, playing outside with chalk or bubbles, or reading books on the couch. These give your session shape without feeling forced.

A full-day session is something entirely different. It can truly be a day in your life—from sleepy morning bedhead to after-school activities to bedtime stories. There’s space for the full rhythm of your day, including rest, quiet, and even a little screen time if that’s part of your normal flow. Longer sessions give us the freedom to slow down and embrace every pace of life.

No matter the length, we’ll work together to create a plan that feels natural and supportive. You won’t be left wondering what to do—we’ll have already talked it through.

And if you need inspiration, I’ll share a list of simple ideas to get you started.

SESSION TIME

When I arrive, we’ll take a few minutes to connect before I ever pick up my camera. Building comfort and trust comes first—especially for your kids.

Then you simply move through your day.

Follow your usual rhythm or ease into one of the activities we planned. The best moments often happen in between, so there’s no need to rush or fill every second. Let things unfold naturally.

There’s also no pressure to perform. Real is always better than perfect, and I’m there for all of it—the laughter, the meltdowns, the quiet moments, the chaos, and everything in between.

Most families are surprised by how quickly the camera fades into the background. And even more surprised when they see the images—moments they didn’t realize were being captured at all.

Unless you’ve experienced a documentary session before, it will likely feel different from anything you’ve done.

But if you come in open, present, and willing to lean into your real life as it is, I believe you’ll walk away with more than just photographs.

You’ll leave feeling more connected, more seen—and with memories that matter just as much as the images themselves.

Session Fee + Products/images

I take on a limited number of family documentary sessions each month so I can give my full heart, creativity, and attention to the families and individuals I work with—from the very first email to the final gallery delivery.

Because documentary sessions are story-based rather than pose-based, packages are organized by session length so you can choose the format that best fits the season you’re in.

Session fee

Includes: Pre-session communication and planning. | Travel anywhere in the Phoenix metro area. | The creation of your artwork during and after the session. | A private online gallery of thoughtfully curated, professionally edited, high-resolution images—ready for download and crafted to reflect your story with honesty and care.

3 hours

3 hours

A three-hour session captures a meaningful slice of your family’s real, everyday life. It gives us time to settle in, move past the camera, and document genuine moments as they unfold. Together, we’ll choose a time of day that reflects what you want to remember most.

Half Day

6 hours

A half-day session is my most popular option, giving me time to truly blend into your family’s natural rhythm. We’ll typically focus on a morning into afternoon or afternoon into evening, documenting everyday routines like waking, meals, play, and bedtime. With more time together, we’re able to tell a fuller story of your life as it unfolds.

Full Day

12 hours

A full-day session is the most complete way to document your family’s everyday life. I’ll photograph from morning through evening, capturing the rhythms, routines, and in-between moments that make up your day. It’s a chance to slow down, be fully present with your kids, and let me preserve all the little moments that are so easy to miss.

Full Year

24 hours divided over a year

A full-year session is the most complete way to document your family’s life and how it changes over time. It includes 24 hours of coverage spread throughout the year, scheduled however you choose, capturing different seasons, milestones, and everyday rhythms. It’s a beautiful way to see not just a moment, but the story of your life as it unfolds across a full year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Documentary photography is about telling the truth of your life as it actually is—not a polished, posed version of it.

Instead of directing or staging moments, I observe and photograph what’s already happening. The way your toddler reaches for you without thinking. The chaos of getting out the door. The quiet moments you didn’t even realize mattered.

It’s less about creating a moment and more about noticing one.

The goal isn’t perfection—it’s connection, memory, and meaning.

Live your life. Truly.

That might sound overly simple, but it’s the whole point. You can follow your normal rhythm or lean into a few activities we planned ahead of time.

It doesn’t need to be flashy to be meaningful. In fact, the more ordinary it feels, the more powerful it often is.

If you’re ever unsure, just ask yourself: What would we be doing right now on a normal day? Start there.

Because real life takes time.

It takes time for everyone to settle in, to forget about the camera, to move past the “we’re being photographed” feeling and into something real. The best moments usually don’t happen right away—they unfold slowly, in between everything else.

Longer sessions also give space for the full rhythm of your life. The energy, the quiet, the mess, the reset. That’s where the story is.

We’re not chasing a handful of perfect images—we’re telling something deeper than that.

Your favorite outfit that makes you feel cute.

No need to coordinate perfectly or buy something new (unless you need an excuse). I always recommend choosing clothes you feel cute and comfortable in and that reflect your everyday life.

But also, messy buns, and pajamas at breakfast are all welcome here.

Dirty, messy or just lived in?

Obviously you want to take care of the dirty stuff. Wash the dishes and mop the floor.

But other than that, it’s perfect.

I mean that sincerely. Your home doesn’t need to look like a magazine—it just needs to look like yours. The toys on the floor, stuffys all over the bed, the evidence of a life being lived… that’s part of the story.

If there’s something that truly stresses you out, feel free to tidy or declutter that one area. But beyond that, I want you to be able to relax and not feel like you’re preparing your home for inspection.

And definitely don't feel like you need to clean while I'm there. If dishes usually go in the sink and sit there for a bit, then let them sit in the sink!

Your kids won’t remember how clean the house was. They’ll remember how it felt to be there.

You’re not.

I’ve never walked into a home and found nothing worth photographing. Not once.

What feels ordinary to you might be the most unique thing in the world, and even if its not, the way you do it is still unique to you. And I promise, it's deeply meaningful when you step back and see it.

You don’t need to entertain me or perform. Just show up as yourselves. That’s always enough.

Really.

I won’t pose you or ask you to look at the camera and smile.

My role isn’t to direct your story. It’s to notice it.

Next Step

Schedule a Phone Call

Whether you’re cautious, curious, or ready to dive in, the next step is a phone call.

I want to get to know you—and give you a chance to get to know me. We’ll talk about your family, what your days actually look like, what draws you to this kind of photography, and the parts of your story that feel important to document right now.

We might brainstorm a little or do some light planning, but mostly we’ll focus on what matters most to you and finding a date that works for both of us.

I can't wait to meet you!

I know choosing a photographer (and investing in photos) is a big decision.
If this feels like the right fit, I would truly love to work with your family.
