Family Pictures at Seven Sacred Pools in Sedona, Arizona

If you’ve been dreaming of Family Pictures at Seven Sacred Pools, you already know how magical this Sedona location is. The glowing red rocks, layered desert textures, and seasonal water reflections create one of the most iconic backdrops in Arizona. At Maren Elizabeth Photography, I love helping families capture connection-filled, adventurous moments in some of Sedona’s most beautiful landscapes — and Seven Sacred Pools definitely delivers.

That said, this location is stunning… but it does require some thoughtful planning. Here’s everything you need to know before choosing it for your session.

Why Seven Sacred Pools is Perfect for Family Pictures

Seven Sacred Pools offers a uniquely Sedona experience. The layered rock formations create natural leading lines, while the open sky gives us that soft, glowing desert sunset light that photographs beautifully.

When there’s water in the pools, the reflections add an extra layer of depth and magic. Even when the pools are dry, the textured rock basins and surrounding red cliffs make for an earthy, adventurous setting that feels both intimate and grand.

This is a perfect location for families who love exploring together and don’t mind a short hike to reach something truly special.

Important Logistics for Family Pictures at Seven Sacred Pools

This is the most important section to read before booking.

Parking can be tricky. There is only a small parking lot at the trailhead, and it can be difficult to find a spot. That lot is only open Monday through Wednesday. If you plan to drive, I recommend arriving extra early — or consider having an Uber drop you off.

The closest overflow parking is about a mile from the trailhead, which adds additional walking time before your hike even begins.

From Thursday through Sunday, the trailhead parking lot is completely closed. During those days, you must take the shuttle from the Posse Grounds Park & Ride.

If we’re planning for that dreamy golden sunset light, the timing becomes very specific:

  • Catch the 3:20pm shuttle to the trailhead
  • Hike about 20 minutes to Seven Sacred Pools
  • Complete the session
  • Return to the trailhead by 5:08pm to catch the last shuttle back

With young kids, this timeline can feel a little rushed and stressful. It’s absolutely doable — but it’s important to go in prepared.

If you have your heart set on Seven Sacred Pools but don’t want to deal with the shuttle logistics, an Uber is still a great option.

One more thing: water in the pools is not guaranteed. If you only want this location when the pools are filled, make sure it has rained at least once in the weeks leading up to your session.

Best Time of Year to Shoot at Seven Sacred Pools

Spring and fall are ideal for comfort and beautiful light. The temperatures are more manageable, which makes the hike much easier for families with little ones.

Winter can also be stunning, with softer light and fewer crowds. Summer sessions are possible, but we’ll need to be mindful of heat and hydration.

And remember — if you’re hoping for water in the pools, recent rainfall is key.

What to Wear for Your Session

The red rocks photograph beautifully with soft, earthy tones like:

  • Cream
  • Rust
  • Sage
  • Teal blue
  • Warm neutrals

Flowy dresses add movement, and closed-toe shoes are a must for the hike. I also recommend bringing layers depending on the season, as desert temperatures can shift quickly near sunset.

Tips for a Stress-Free Experience

  • Arrive early
  • Bring water and small snacks
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes
  • Plan for the hike
  • Keep expectations flexible
  • Embrace the adventure

When families lean into the experience instead of rushing through it, that’s when the most genuine moments happen.
