What Happens when things go wrong (and it’s my fault 😬)

What happens when things go wrong (and it’s my fault)? At Maren Elizabeth Photography, I believe in making it right. During a planned urban rooftop family session in Tempe, AZ, we were unexpectedly asked to leave by security. Even though my clients were gracious, I wasn’t satisfied with how the session turned out. So I offered a complimentary reshoot — no questions asked. Your family memories matter too much to settle for “good enough.” When you book with me, you can trust that if something goes wrong, especially because of me, I’ll step up, take responsibility, and make it right.

I do everything in my power to make sure your Maren Elizabeth Photography family photo session goes smoothly. My goal is always fun, stress-free, and exactly what we’ve envisioned together.

But like most things in life… sometimes things happen.

So I want you to know exactly what happens when things go wrong — especially when it’s my fault.

An Urban Rooftop Skateboarding Session

As I got to know this sweet family before their session, I learned that their little girl loved to skateboard with her dad. That tiny nugget of their story sparked a vision: an urban rooftop session, skateboards in tow, something playful and uniquely them.

The rooftop I recommended in Tempe, AZ had been shared with me by several photographer friends who had photographed there without issue.

So we arrived.
Climbed the stairs.
Stepped onto the roof.
And started shooting.

And that’s when it all went wrong.

I knew we were in trouble when a lone figure started walking toward us from the far side of the roof. A security guard.

I kept smiling. Kept shooting. Fired my shutter as quickly as I could because I had a feeling what was about to happen.

“This is private property. You have to go.”

What Happens When Things Go Wrong (And It’s My Fault 😬)

I felt awful.

I had done my research. I had firsthand accounts that said this wouldn’t happen. But there we were — being escorted off the roof.

Thankfully, there were no fines or further consequences. Just a bruised ego and a scrambling photographer.

We headed down to street level and continued the session the best we could. They were gracious and understanding. I left feeling… okay. But not great.

When I got home and began editing, I knew immediately I needed to make this right.

The rooftop images? Pure gold. Everything we had envisioned and more.

The street-level images?

Meh.

They weren’t terrible. But they weren’t what I had hoped to give them. And that matters to me.

So when I delivered their gallery, I included a note:

“I feel bad about getting us kicked off the roof. I know this wasn’t what we had envisioned. I’d love to offer you a reshoot.”

They hadn’t complained. They hadn’t even seen the images yet. I didn’t have to offer that.

But when things go wrong — and it’s my fault — I make it right.

The Reshoot

For the reshoot, we decided to pivot. During our original planning, we had also considered a green space. It felt like the perfect opportunity to try that direction — especially since they already had a handful of rooftop images they loved.

We reserved the Four Silos Farm Olive Grove, and it was absolutely perfect.

Their little girl ran through the grass. Laughed. Played. Snuggled up with her parents. The light was soft, the setting peaceful, and the connection effortless.

It was everything their session was meant to be.

When Things Go Wrong, I’ve Got You

As an artist, a business owner, and the person you trust to document your family’s story, I take that responsibility seriously.

If I mess up — whether it’s a location issue, a timing mistake, or something within my control — I won’t leave you wondering what happens next.

You won’t have to fight for a solution.
You won’t have to feel awkward bringing it up.
You won’t be left hanging.

When things go wrong (and it’s my fault), I make it right.

That’s my promise to you.
